Dengue Fever

About

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has been steadily increasing in prevalence and geographic range worldwide. While historically not endemic to the continental United States, climate change and increased global travel have raised concerns about potential local transmission in southern states with suitable mosquito habitats. The public health significance for the U.S. includes the need for enhanced surveillance, mosquito control efforts, and traveler education to prevent imported cases from sparking local outbreaks.

Response Resources

The following resources are intended for health departments, clinicians, and the general public.

Toolkits and Operational Guides for Health Departments

Document Purpose

Dengue Technical Handbook for Surveillance, Outbreak Prediction and Detection, and Outbreak Response [WHO]

Provides key information and definitions for Dengue surveillance activities at the local or state level, along with helpful information for vector management, stakeholder involvement, and risk communication.
Operational Guide to Using the web-based Dashboard; Early Warning Response System (EWARS) for Dengue Outbreaks [WHO]This guide provides the information and tools necessary to use and analyze surveillance data to predict dengue outbreaks.

Vector Management Tools

Document Purpose

Handbook for Integrated Vector Management[WHO]

Integrated vector management (IVM) is a rational decision-making process to optimize the use of resources for vector control. The aim of the IVM approach is to contribute to achievement of the global targets set for vector-borne disease control, by making vector control more efficient, cost effective, ecologically sound and sustainable. The intention of this handbook is to provide to the managers of vector-borne disease control programs, other officials in health and other sectors involved in vector-borne disease control with necessary guidance and an operational framework for the implementation of IVM
Setting up a Municipal Mosquito Control Program: A practical Guide to the Design, Cost, and Implementation of Public Mosquito Control [Mississippi State University]This guide provides the information on cost, design, and benefits of the different approaches a mosquito control program would use to reduce a mosquito population
