Sutyajeet “Sut” Soneja, PhD

Dr. Soneja is an Associate Scientist with the Center for Outbreak Response and Innovation. He has more than 15 years of experience in global environmental health, biomedical engineering, and science policy.

Prior to joining the Center, Dr. Soneja was an epidemiologist and lead public health specialist with the MITRE Corporation, where his activities included serving as a task lead within the COVID-19 Testing and Diagnostics Working Group, project lead for an NIH-oriented initiative on rare diseases, and contributor on multiple other projects spanning various health security-related areas, including emerging pathogens in the Arctic, the stand up of ARPA-H, and testing and evaluation for mass scale countermeasure production with BARDA. Previously, Dr. Soneja served as a senior epidemiologist with Resolve to Save Lives, where he was seconded to North Carolina’s Wake County Emergency Operations Center to advise on COVID-19 response initiatives.

Dr. Soneja obtained a PhD in environmental health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and was a Science & Technology Policy Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) hosted by the US Agency for International Development. His doctoral dissertation included conducting interdisciplinary field research in South Asia studying air pollution, climate change, and maternal and child heath, while his AAAS fellowship focused on health system strengthening in West Africa as a part of the post-Ebola recovery effort. He also has completed a postdoctoral fellowship in environmental epidemiology to assess the impact of climate change upon health, served as a science diplomat focused on global health topics at the US Embassy in Italy, worked for a Fortune 500 company as an engineer engaged with veterinary health, and independently consulted for several international organizations such as WHO, the UN Refugee Agency, and the UN Development Programme. Dr. Soneja also holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees in biomedical and biological engineering from the North Carolina State University.
